The GDPR aims to protect all EU citizens from privacy and data breaches in an increasingly data-driven world vastly different from when the 1995 directive was established. Current regulations are not tailored for the digital economy, which is a significant problem for both businesses and consumers.
The financial penalties for failing to comply with the GDPR are clearly defined: for each instance of noncompliance, organizations could potentially face a fine of up to 20 million euros or 4 percent of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher.
